How To Tune A Guitar

Here we will explain how to tune a guitar.

First it is important to know how the strings are numbered in relation to their placement on the guitar. Strings will often be referred to by number as well as by note name.

The first, or thinnest string, is the bottom string; closest to the bottom of the fingerboard as you are holding the guitar. The sixth, or thickest string, is on the top of the fingerboard as you are holding the guitar.

The first string is tuned to "E"

The second string is tuned to "B"

The third string is tuned to "G"

The fourth string is tuned to "D"

The fifth string is tuned to "A"

The sixth string is tuned to "E" (at a lower octave than the first string "E")

names of notes for each guitar string

How do I know if the strings are tuned to the right pitch? That's simple. You need a tuner. There are many electronic guitar tuners on the market priced in the range of $15 to $30. Don't skip out on buying this required accsessory!!! If you can't tune your guitar, you will not be able to play it! MUSICIAN'S FRIEND and GUITAR CENTER both offer a wide selection of tuners for reasonable prices in their online stores. Most models can be plugged into to tune an electric guitar, and also have a built-in microphone for tuning acoustic guitars.

TIP: Be sure to memorise "E A D G B E", as when learning to play it will be absolutely necessary to know the note names for each string.
